Harassment Allegations at the University of Southern California and the California State University System

In recent years, higher education institutions across the United States have faced increased scrutiny regarding harassment allegations. Among these institutions, the University of Southern California (USC) and California State University (Cal State University) have come under the spotlight due to concerning incidents of harassment.

Harassment Allegations at USC

Former USC Athletic Director Mike Bohn is facing allegations of sexual harassment and misconduct. Bohn recently left the university amidst an investigation into the allegations against him.

It’s now come to light that in past roles, Bohn was accused of creating a toxic work environment that was especially challenging for women and minorities.

Harassment Allegations at Cal State University

Cal State University, a prominent public university system in California, is also facing allegations that it mishandled harassment allegations. Over the past year, CSU’s responses to sexual harassment complaints have come under scrutiny.

One report found that the former Chancellor Joseph I. Castro failed to take action against a campus administrator accused of multiple instances of sexual harassment. Castro resigned from his role in February 2022.

Another report found that across 12 campuses, at least 54 faculty members, coaches, and employees were found to have violated discrimination and sexual misconduct policies over the past five years.

What’s Next for California Universities

The harassment allegations at USC and Cal State University have exposed the deep-seated issues prevalent in higher education institutions. These incidents serve as a wake-up call for universities across the country to prioritize the safety and well-being of their students and employees.

While both universities have taken steps to address the allegations, ongoing efforts are needed to ensure a culture of respect, transparency, and accountability.
